COUPON TIPS:

I’m definitely new to this couponing game, but I’ve found a lot of great tips on various websites. Here are some that I found particularly useful:

  • Couponing can be time consuming, but you can start slowly and begin saving today! Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed, so you’re more likely to stick with it.
  • Pick one store to start with – learn their coupon policy and begin with just a few coupons (printable coupons are a great way to start).
    • Gradually add more stores to your list as you become more comfortable with couponing (I never realized how many stores accept coupons!)
    • Gradually add more coupons, such as from the Sunday inserts, and organize them so you’re more likely to find and use them when needed.
  • Coupons can be used for a variety of items at a variety of stores. Plan on going to the mall or a department store? Before you leave, make a quick visit to the Internet, and see if you can snag a coupon first! (You’ll be surprised by how many great deals are out there!)
  • Many stores allow you to “stack” a manufacturer’s coupon with a store coupon. (Target and Toys R Us often have store coupons!)
  • If you have a coupon but the item isn’t currently on sale (and you don’t need it right away), wait a week or two to purchase it, because items usually don’t go on sale the same week the coupon is distributed, and you can maximize your savings by using the coupon on a sale item.
    • When you combine a coupon with a great sale price, the item often ends up free or close to it!
  • Only clip coupons for items you use or can give as a gift. Also, if you can get something you don’t normally use for free or close to it, consider purchasing and donating it. Many shelters and other organizations that help the needy will take health and beauty items.
  • Once you get the hang of it, you can slowly combine all of the above, shop at a few stores each week, buy what’s on sale using coupons, and save money!
